About me

Gerard's work

I founded United Design Group in Seattle in the early 1990s as a studio exploring the intersection of design, technology and storytelling. Over the years, the work has travelled with me – from Seattle to San Francisco and now London – but the philosophy has remained consistent.

I’ve worked across a wide range of design disciplines including graphic design, photography, interaction design, product design, and retail environment design — from online experiences to physical spaces. My projects have spanned rock’n’roll, fashion, dot-com, e-commerce, architecture, and brick-and-mortar retail.

Client work has included art direction and information design for organisations such as Microsoft, Boeing, Nintendo, Centrica, Warner DVD, Sir Paul McCartney and David Bowie.

In the early 2000s, as digital distribution reshaped the music industry, I created PlayFairNow.org in response to what I saw happening to musicians – particularly around platform economics and artist compensation. This work led WIRED Magazine to contact me for comment, and I was later quoted in their coverage of the issue.

After the birth of my twin daughters in 2003, UDG moved in and out of hiatus as life required.

Today, UDG continues as a personal studio for design, writing, music, photography and independent creative technology work. Current projects include music writing/production and performing with London-based bands including NoteToSelfDontDie.co.uk.
